While some of you may have never purchased a stock before, I’ll admit that I have purchased a stock without doing any research. I made assumptions, heard “promising news”, followed the hype, and lost my shirt. I now know the importance of doing your research. If you’re ready to start researching stocks, in this episode, we’re chatting about reliable tools to research stocks. Also, stay to the end, where I share a shortlist of my favorite financial educators in the investing space.
How To Research Stocks For Beginners
In this episode, we cover:
- How to research stocks to buy
- Where to research stocks
- Best stock research tools
- Best stock research websites
1. Motley Fool Stock Advisor
Motley Fool Stock Advisor is a subscription service that identifies long-term investment opportunities and shares (2) stock picks per month sent directly to your inbox.
This is a useful tool if you’re looking to cut down on the time it takes to look for good investing opportunities.
Motley Fool provides recommendations and reports to help you make informed decisions. They share analysis of what the company does, why they’re excited about the stock, and why you should buy now.
As a reminder, Motley Fool believes in holding a stock for 5+ years and buying shares of at least 25 companies.
2. Yahoo Finance
Yahoo Finance offers real-time data and up-to-date news, and it’s a great place for basic stock research. Use this stock research tool to look up companies and add them to your watch list.
What is a watch list?
A watch list lists stocks you’re keeping an eye on and helps track companies you’re interested in.

Investopedia simplifies complex financial concepts and breaks them down, making them easier to understand.
Follow them on Instagram (@investopedia) – I really like their investing term of the week series.
4. Earning Whispers
Earnings Whispers – shares a calendar of earnings releases. It tells you when a company plans to report their earnings, the exact day, and whether they plan to report before open or after market close.
Why are quarterly earnings reports important?
Publicly traded companies provide a complete picture of how the company is doing every quarter, sharing an overview of sales, expenses, income, and more.
Before earnings seasons, analysts predict a company’s financial performance, and when a company releases its quarterly earnings, investors compare the analyst’s predictions with the actual results.
If a company beats or misses analysts’ expectations, you can expect the stock price to either rise or fall. Heads up, there’s usually a lot of market volatility during earnings season.
