Black Travel Alliance increasing the representation of Black travelers in travel marketing.

Although Black travelers spend over $109 Billion on travel annually, we are grossly underrepresented in travel marketing. Black travel content creators are passed up for media and employment opportunities as well as paid campaigns. We are not paid equitably, and many travel brands neglect to market directly to us. Yet, there are many Black travel content creators covering a wide variety of topics from culinary travel to couples travel. Black Travel Alliance is changing that.

Black Travel Alliance (BTA) is a group of Black travel content creators worldwide on a mission to support Black content creators and increase their representation in the travel industry, including but not limited to employment, conferences, and media. BTA is fighting for equal opportunities in the travel space and holding the travel industry accountable.

Spurred by the George Floyd tragedy and the subsequent black squares many travel brands posted on social media, the launch team consisted of 17 founding members. Their first campaign #PullUpForTravel challenged the disconnect between travel brands’ “Black Lives Matter” pronouncements and their actions in the travel space.

Since launching in June 2020, BTA now features a job board, and they host networking and educational events like Pitching Do’s and Don’ts. They aim to provide training and business support to members and hold destinations and travel brands accountable on the issue of diversity in travel marketing and storytelling.

A special thank you to Dr. Nadeen White (The Sophisticated Life), Martina Johnson (ThatCoupleWhoTravels.com), and Lauren Gay (Outdoorsy Diva) for joining us.
